A GPS speedometer uses location readings from your device to estimate how fast you are moving. On iPhone, apps such as ClearSpeed GPS receive location updates from iOS and display speed in the unit you choose.
What the speed number means
GPS speed is based on changes in position over time. When your device has a strong signal and you are moving steadily, the reading can be a useful real-time reference. When signal is weak, blocked, reflected, or still settling, readings can lag or jump.
What affects GPS speed accuracy
- Sky visibility and nearby buildings, hills, trees, or tunnels.
- The quality of the GPS signal your device is receiving.
- Whether you are standing still, starting, stopping, or moving steadily.
- Battery and system conditions that can affect update frequency.
- Where the phone is placed inside a vehicle, boat, or bag.
ClearSpeed GPS shows signal state
ClearSpeed GPS shows Good, Weak, or Searching so you can tell when the app has confidence in the signal. It does not pretend weak GPS is perfect.
Why smoothing matters
Raw GPS readings can jump, especially when signal changes quickly. ClearSpeed GPS smooths the displayed speed so the number stays readable without hiding the underlying GPS state.
What ClearSpeed GPS is not
ClearSpeed GPS is not a certified instrument, route tracker, speed limit database, map, or navigation app. Use it as an informational speed display and keep your attention on safe operation.
